Rules and regulations

It is important that all candidates are familiar with the rules and regulations surrounding the IELTS test.

You must:

• Provide proof of your identity using a valid passport in the morning at registration and prior to your Speaking Exam. Your passport must contain a passport number, a signature, a date of birth and a photograph.
• Only have on your desk your identification, pencil/pen (provided by the Exam Centre), an eraser (provided by the test centre), and your passport.
• Ensure cell phone, pagers and any other electronic device is switched off and placed with personal belongings outside the room (or preferably left at home or in your car). Any candidate who does not switch off their phone/pager, or who retains one in their possession will be immediately disqualified and asked to leave the test
• Notify the Invigilator or Test Supervisor immediately if test day conditions in any way impede your performance

You must NOT:

• Impersonate another person or have another person impersonate you
• Attempt to cheat, copy the work of another candidate or disrupt the test
• Use, or attempt to use, a dictionary, pager, spell-checker, electronic recorder or cell phone for the duration of the test. Any candidate doing so will be disqualified and asked to leave
• Talk to or disturb other candidates once the examination has started
• Smoke or eat in the examination room
• Reproduce any part of the test in any format/medium. Any candidate doing so will have their test results disqualified and be liable to prosecution.
• Remove any materials used during the examination. This includes, but is not limited to, examination papers, speaking task cards, answer papers or working papers.

Types of tests you can take in Nigeria

The IELTS tests come in two versions: Academic and General Training. Test takers can select either based on their educational or professional objectives and visa requirements. Both versions include four sections evaluating listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills.

1. IELTS Academic: Designed for individuals aiming to study or work in academic environments. It assesses English proficiency necessary for university-level education, regardless of the field. Many professions, such as medicine or engineering, may require Academic test results for registration in various countries.
2. IELTS General Training: Assesses English proficiency in everyday situations, reflecting workplace and social contexts. Test formats

What to expect on the test day

Arriving early is crucial for your test day. Ensure you have ample time to reach the venue, considering potential traffic and the need to find parking. Registration and passport checks are mandatory before entering the examination room, so follow the advised arrival time stated in your Test Day Confirmation Letter to avoid being denied entry due to lateness.

Leave all personal items except your passport at home or store them with the test day staff, as no items are allowed in the test room. Your identification will be verified using the same ID used during booking, and a photo will be taken for your IELTS Test Report Form. Finger scans will also be conducted for identity confirmation.

During the test, follow the invigilator’s instructions closely and refrain from speaking to other candidates. Only essential items like your passport, pencils, eraser, and a drink in a transparent bottle are permitted on your desk, though these will be provided if necessary.

You must remain seated until instructed otherwise and are not allowed to leave during specific periods of the test. If you encounter any issues or need assistance, raise your hand to alert the supervisor, but note that they won’t provide explanations for questions.

After completing the test, remain seated until instructed to leave and ensure you collect your belongings. Provisional results will be available online within a specified timeframe, and you can choose to collect them in person or have them posted to you based on your registration preferences.

Throughout the test day, cooperate with the staff and invigilators, following their directions and instructions. They undergo thorough training and are regularly assessed for their performance and conduct.
