Presentation of ESSTIC (ASMAC)
ESSTIC is a professional training institution of the University of Yaoundé II. It offers bachelor’s and master’s level training in the information and communication professions.
– The training courses open at the Bachelor level (bac+3) concern the following professions: journalism, advertising, organizational communication, publishing, archives and librarianship.
– At the master’s level, ESSTIC is developing a policy of creating thematic and specialized professional master’s degrees to provide specific responses to the specific needs of the information and communication labour market. These rotating professional masters are open for a period of one or two years each. The professional skills provided by ESSTIC in this context to date are sports journalism, communication on health and the environment, political communication, archival finance-banking-insurance, and event communication.
– In its status as a university institution, ESSTIC has a doctoral training unit (UFD) and a research laboratory in information and communication sciences. The doctoral training unit oversees the training of student researchers for the doctorate-PhD and for access to the authorization to direct research (HDR).
The research laboratory supervises the production of a biannual international scientific journal of research in information and communication sciences: Frequency Sud. It also works on the organization of conferences and, more generally, on the scientific animation of the institution.
ESSTIC has been engaged since 2007 in a program of institutional and academic reforms. The academic reforms relate essentially to the appropriation of the LMD system. These reforms have led to a total overhaul of the teaching programs at the bachelor’s and master’s levels.
At the institutional level, ESSTIC is headed by a director assisted by a deputy director in charge of studies. The management of the school relies on the “foresight centre” for strategic thinking, planning activities, and for managing specific projects.
Academic management is ensured by ten departments grouped together within three specialized poles. The departments are responsible for designing and administering program content and teaching programming. The specialized centres constitute a framework for consultation and harmonization allowing nearby departments to bring their program content and the programming of their lessons into line.
The general secretariat is in charge of the administrative management of the establishment’s personnel, equipment and logistics. Financial services are headed by a steward. These deal with the preparation and execution of the budget under the guidance and direct responsibility of the Director, the authorized officer of expenditure.
A project to reorganize ESSTIC is underway within government authorities and should lead to internal institutional redeployment in accordance with the institution’s development plan for 2015.
