Education/Kenya: CBC to be Changed as Education Task Force Recommend New Structure of 2-6-2-4-3 Instead of 2-6-3-3-3.
Learners in Grade Six may proceed with Grade Seven and Grade Eight while still in their current primary schools. This idea could minimize transitional challenges that the government faces and also reduce parents’ worries about the age of their children. Parents had complained that Grade 6 pupils are too young to transit to secondary schools.
According to the Standard, the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms has also made new recommendations. It emerges that the current CBC system could reportedly be changed further.
The education task force has already proposed to the government that the present CBC structure of 2-6-3-3-3 years be changed to a new one of 2-6-2-4-3 years.
It emerges that this proposal has been made to bridge the gaps on how the present 8-4-4 learners may transit out of the system first and later give way for the new crop of Competency-Based Curriculum learners.
Insiders in the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms task force told a local daily that current Class 7 pupils under 8-4-4 will sit for KCPE next year and move to Form 1 before first Grade 6 transit to secondary schools.
In the new proposal, it emerges that learners will spend 2 years in pre-primary, 6 years in primary, 2 years in Junior Secondary instead of 3, and 4 years in senior secondary instead of 3, and 3 years in the University. It has also been established that Junior Secondary could be located in primary schools.
