The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) is the state oil corporation that was established on April 1, 1977. In addition to its exploration activities, the Corporation was given powers and operational interests in refining, petrochemicals and products transportation as well as marketing. Between 1978 and 1989, NNPC constructed refineries in Warri, Kaduna and Port Harcourt and took over the 35,000-barrel Shell Refinery established in Port Harcourt in 1965.
In 1988, the NNPC was commercialised into 12 strategic business units, covering the entire spectrum of oil industry operations: exploration and production, gas development, refining, distribution, petrochemicals, engineering, and commercial investments. Currently, the subsidiary companies include:

- The Nigerian Gas Company (NGC)
- The Products and Pipelines Marketing Company (PPMC)
- Integrated Data Services Limited (IDSL)
- National Engineering and Technical Company Limited (NETCO)
- Hydrocarbon Services Nigeria Limited (HYSON)
- Warri Refinery and Petrochemical Co. Limited (WRPC)
- Kaduna Refinery and Petrochemical Co. Limited (KRPC)
- Port Harcourt Refining Co. Limited (PHRC)

- Duke Oil
In addition to these subsidiaries, the industry is also regulated by the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), a department within the Ministry of Petroleum Resources. The DPR ensures compliance with industry regulations; processes applications for licenses, leases and permits, establishes and enforces environmental regulations. The DPR, and NAPIMS, play a very crucial role in the day to day activities throughout the industry.
Objectives of the NNPC
As a socially responsible organization, the NNPC delivers its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) objectives in line with global best practices. The Corporation, therefore, guided by social, environmental and safety standards as obtained in the Oil and Gas industry, operates safely and deals ethically with all our stakeholders.
The crux of our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) objectives are hinged on improving the overall well-being of our stakeholders and members of the host communities through the provision of sustainable projects and programmes in all spheres of life namely; Health, Education, Economic Empowerment, Sports/Arts and Culture and Charitable/Professional donations. We also engage in CSR activities to support the development of the local economies in all our areas of operation.
Strategies
The NNPC, her Subsidiaries and Joint Venture (JV)/Production Sharing Contract (PSC) Partners deploy the underlisted strategies to ensure that the host communities and other stakeholders derive maximum benefits from the various CSR projects and programmes that are being implemented:
- Stakeholders’ Engagement involves a participatory partnership between all stakeholders in the communities for the identification and development of Sustainable Community Development (SCD) projects.
- Needs Assessment Studies helps to determine the immediate, medium and long term needs of the host communities.
- Global Memorandum of Understanding (GMoU) is a participatory concept which regulates the relationship between the Oil Companies, the host communities and other stakeholders i.e. LGAs and state governments. The GMoU has embedded in it a model of transparency and accountability that is the bedrock of its sustainability.
- Monitoring and Evaluation of projects and programmes to ensure that they are executed in line with agreed project scope and budget as well as to assure quality and value for money.
- Impact Assessment Survey of completed projects and programmes to measure the functionality of the projects/programmes and to ascertain if the beneficiaries derive the intended benefits from them.
Education
NNPC places a premium on the role of education in sustainable development. It, therefore, encourages the execution of programmes and projects aimed at providing access to quality education. Through the various education programmes, NNPC and her JV/PSC Partners build the capacity of the Nigerian students. The huge investments in the education sector have contributed immensely to manpower development hence the Nigerian labour market access quality human resource through the various capacity building initiatives derived from the NNPC and her Partners.
The projects and programmes in this sector include; Provision of Books, Computers and Laboratory equipment etc, Construction and furnishing of Science Laboratories and Electronic Libraries, Construction and furnishing of model schools, NYSC Teachers’ Scheme, University Support Programmes and Endowment Funds, Scholarships Schemes at tertiary, University and postgraduate levels (both national and overseas ) and Science Quiz Competitions. All these impactful programmes and projects are being executed by the NNPC in collaboration with her Partners in the Country’s Six Geo-Political zones for the benefit of the Nigerian students.
Health
Investing in the health and overall well-being of the people in whose area we operate is one of NNPC’s cardinal CSR deliverables. We, therefore, execute projects that will improve their lifestyles through the provision of health care facilities and programmes and this include Construction and equipping of Maternal Referral Centres, Cottage hospitals, Diagnostic Laboratories, HIV/ Malaria/Cancer awareness and Prevention programmes, Chest Clinics for the treatment of tuberculosis and other chest related diseases, provision of drugs and specialized equipment for Hospitals, Provision of Mobile Clinics, Mass Deworming and Immunization Exercises and Mobile Eye Clinics and Free Treatments.
These activities have over the years helped to prevent diseases, reduce the high mortality rate and generally improve the health of the people in our host communities and other benefitting stakeholders nationwide.
Economic Empowerment and Capacity Building
The NNPC has aggressively embarked on the creation and multiplication of wealth in our host communities through programmes that have contributed to the development of local economies in these areas. These enterprise development programmes have contributed immensely to the elimination of youth unemployment by equipping them with marketable skills, providing platforms for income generating ventures and building the capacity of the beneficiaries to enable them to meet their daily needs.
The NNPC and her JV/PSC Partners, therefore, execute Skills Acquisition Programmes that builds capacities and provides competencies in trades and vocations such as Textile Designs and Dressmaking, Hairdressing, Automobile Technicians, Carpentry, Welding, Hotel Management, Cattle Rearing, Poultry, Snailery, Piggeries, Fisheries and specialized skills such as those obtained in the Maritime Academy etc.
The NNPC and her partners also establishes Micro-Credit Schemes that encourages focused entrepreneurial development in our host communities. The seed funds for these schemes are usually funded in collaboration with financial organizations.
Water, Sanitisation and Hygiene
The peculiarities of the terrain in which we conduct our businesses have necessitated the need to provide our host communities with access to clean, safe and drinkable water in line with the World Health Organization (WHO) standard.
It is against this background that the NNPC and her Partners have engaged in the provision of potable water to the people in order to improve their sanitary conditions and general well-being. The projects implemented under this sector are namely: Construction of integrated water schemes and treatment plants, Construction of Mono pumps and recently, Reticulated Solar-Powered Boreholes.
In addition to these projects, Health awareness seminars and campaigns are conducted in partnerships with States’ Ministries of Health to educate and enlighten the members of the communities on basic toilet usage and ways to separate human waste and its contact with people.
There are also ongoing concerted efforts to encourage people to imbibe good hygiene practices that will prevent diseases, increase their lives span and improve their living/ health conditions.
Youth Development and Sports
To foster peace and promote cordial relationships between host communities, the NNPC and her Partners, organize inter-communal sporting activities such as football, volleyball, lawn tennis, etc.
Talented youths at the national levels are also given the opportunity to combine their sports skills with their education. They are encouraged to participate in various sporting competitions which further showcase their talents.
These Platforms (NNPC/Shell Cup and Annual Junior Tennis Circuit) often become the springboard with which these young professionals secure invitations to participate in foreign competitions. They are also able to secure scholarships into higher institutions of learning.
Infrastructure Development
We task ourselves to ensure that the people of our host communities live in environments that are conducive. Thus, NNPC and her Partners complement the efforts of the Government at all levels by providing the people with basic socio-economic infrastructures that will elevate their standard of living.
These include the provision of Roads, Electricity through Transformers/generators, Jetties, Foot Bridges and facilities such as Town Halls.
Corporate Philanthropy
Apart from our involvement in the provision of Sustainable Community Development projects for the benefit of our host communities, NNPC and her Partners provide supports and contributions to charitable institutions and the underprivileged in the society. Professional bodies whose activities impact our core functions are also supported to realize their objectives for the ultimate good of the Oil and Gas Industry and the nation at large.
