ASUU Strike: ASUU files a new appeal against Industrial Court judgment. Nigerian university students are expected back in class after the suspension of an eight-month strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

That said, The National Industrial Court of Nigeria’s decision to order the teachers back to the classroom has been challenged by the Academic Staff Union of Universities in a new appeal as revealed during a Saturday interview with reporters in the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja by the counsel for ASUU, Femi Falana, SAN.

Sources say the Industrial Court Justice Hamman Polycarp had on September 21 ordered the academics who were on strike to return to work. However, ASUU filed an appeal with the Abuja Appeal Court with the goal of overturning the ruling from the Industrial Court.

The appellate court did state that it would not hear ASUU’s case should the union disobey the lower court’s decision. Therefore, on October 7, the Appeal Court issued an order mandating that the lecturers on strike start up again right away.

On October 14, the 8-month strike came to an end. In certain public universities, academic activities have fully resumed, while in others they have been postponed until the next few days.

Yesterday, Falan claimed that the new appeal was submitted on the same day that the announcement of the suspension of the protracted industrial action was made. But he added, “A date for a hearing has not yet been determined.” NAN report.
