FET Buea: Faculty of Engineering and Technology at the University of Buea

FET Buea: Faculty of Engineering and Technology at the University of Buea. The mission of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology is to train engineers for the creation and growth of industries in Cameroon.

B.Eng IN COMPUTER ENGINEERING

Mission Statement

The Department of Computer Engineering seeks to train students who will be future drivers of
the Information and Communication Technology (I.C.T.) revolution in Cameroon, by providing
skills which go far beyond the use of computers to the design of computer systems, their
implementation in hardware and software and their integration into other systems and
technologies. The training is designed to provide a firm foundation for future careers both in
ICT-based and non-ICT-based industries.
This mission statement ties in with the definition of Computer Engineering by the Institute of
Electrical and Electronic Engineering (I.E.E.E.):
“Computer Engineering is a discipline that embodies the science and technology of design,
construction, implementation and maintenance of software and hardware components of modern
computing systems and computer controlled equipment” – IEEE

UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES

SPECIALTY                                             Computer Engineering
DEGREE OFFERED                                Bachelor of Engineering
DURATION OF STUDIES                      Four (4) Years

Objectives of the Degree Programme

Graduates of the Computer Engineering program will be able to analyse, design, build and
integrate computer systems.

Employment Opportunities

According to the IEEE:
Computer engineers work in most industries, including the computer, aerospace,
telecommunications, power production, manufacturing, defence, and electronics industries. They
design high-tech devices ranging from tiny microelectronic integrated-circuit chips, to powerful
systems that utilize those chips and efficient telecommunication systems that interconnect those
systems. Applications include consumer electronics (CD and DVD players, televisions, stereos,
microwaves, gaming devices) and advanced microprocessors, peripheral equipment, systems for
portable, desktop and client/server computing, and communications devices (cellular phones,
pagers, personal digital assistants). It also includes distributed computing environments (local
and wide area networks, wireless networks, internets, intranets), and embedded computer
systems (such as aircraft, spacecraft, and automobile control systems in which computers are
embedded to perform various functions). A wide array of complex technological systems, such
as power generation and distribution systems and modern processing and manufacturing plants,
rely on computer systems developed and designed by computer engineers.

Admission Requirements

A minimum of 2 A’ Levels in Science including Mathematics.

Graduation Requirements

To graduate a student must earn a minimum of 240 credits. This includes the 18 credits for
University courses.

Skills to be Acquired

Graduates will possess the ability to design computers and computer-based systems that include
both hardware and software to solve novel engineering problems, subject to trade-offs involving
a set of competing goals and constraints. In this context, “design” refers to a level of ability
beyond “assembling” or “configuring” systems.

B.Eng IN ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC ENGINEERING

Mission Statement

The mission of the Department is to provide training which covers the five
technological pillars of Electrical Engineering – Electronics, Electricity, Power
Systems, Telecommunications and Automatic Control Systems. Emphasis is placed
on the predominance of these technologies both as industries in their own right and
as drivers of other technologies.
